Sometimes making that first phone call can be daunting but we are more than happy to hear about your child to see if we can help.

Here is a step by step of how we start the process:-

1. First telephone contact

Please contact us on the numbers below. If we don’t answer straight away please leave a message with your name and contact number and we will call you back as soon as we can.

Here’s what is helpful for us to know:-

  • how old your child is
  • about your child’s communication skills and what you have noticed e.g. my child only says a handful of words, my child has lots to say but it’s hard to understand them, my child is getting stuck on words and is becoming  frustrated.
  • is anyone else supporting your child such as another  speech and language therapist, a specialist teacher or anyone else?

We can then decide together, if your child needs an assessment. Sometimes, following a chat with you and hearing all about your child, we may not need to progress any further at this time.  It may be that we are able to reassure you that everything is ok and is what we would expect for a child of that age.

2. Assessment appointment

We can arrange this at a time to suit you and your child. Normally we would carry out the assessment in your home, where your child is most comfortable and familiar. The appointment usually lasts around 60 minutes.

Depending on your child’s age and needs, we use a combination of informal and formal assessment. We will also need to talk to you to find out more about your child’s development and medical background.

After the assessment, we will spend time with you giving you feedback about how your child is progressing and if we feel your child needs any further support from us.

If we do recommend further appointments, there is never any obligation on you to do this, it is entirely your choice.  Not all children will need further appointments.

Following the appointment, we will write a detailed assessment report which will profile your child’s strengths, needs and also make clear recommendations.  This report will be sent to you within 10 working days, usually by e-mail.

3. Further therapy appointments.

If your child does need more input and you would like us to help, we can arrange further appointments at a time to suit you and your child.

Therapy appointments usually last 45 minutes, which will include time with your child and also feedback to you about your child’s progress. It is always important for you to be there to see what we do so that you can help your child.

We will normally suggest some activities/games that you can use to help your child. These activities can also be provided to your child’s nursery/school. We know that when therapy activities/games are carried out between sessions, progress is often more rapid.

We can agree a number of appointments or it may be you would just like to try 1 appointment. The choice is yours.

Please always ask any questions if you are unsure about any aspect of our service.
